In This Corner of the World was originally serialized from 2007 to 2009. The World War II story follows Suzu Urano as she moves to the small town of Kure with her husband. Suzu’s quiet life with her new family is torn apart when the U.S. drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
Kouno’s manga won critical praise for her soft art, delicate handling and respect for the victims of the Hiroshima bombing, and for having a down-to-Earth story. The manga was adapted into an equally as praised anime movie, which was one of the most awarded films in 2016. A live-action TV special was also produced in 2011.
Weekly Manga Action had comments from Kouno, who relayed that she’s excited about the live-action TV series since there are elements that can only be re-created in live-action. She says, “I think a serial drama is a very close visualization of a serial manga. I am excited to see elements that can be possible in live-action. I want to watch over Suzu-san’s life every week, laughing and crying together with you.”
