Fans are excited about FLCL 2, which is the upcoming surprise sequel to Gainax’s FLCL. The wacky and intense OVA series has won a dedicated cult following and everyone’s eager to see how things will play out later this year.
Details are currently slim, but new info will be shared at next month’s C2E2 event! In the meantime, here is what we know about FLCL 2.
1New cast and new questions
Story details are slim, but we do know a few nuggets. Haruka will return as the series’ catalyst, this time serving as a teacher. The Medical Mechanica is still trying to conquer the universe and has their sights on Haruka, who has returned to Earth for unknown reasons. An unassuming teenage girl named Hidomi is going to be dragged into the crazy events because she has a secret that only Haruka can unlock.
The FLCL 2 project will consist of two six-episode seasons, titled FLCL Progressive and FLCL Alternative. Both works will air later this year.
2Toonami and Production I.G. are co-producing
Adult Swim’s Toonami block is co-producing the new seasons with Production I.G. FLCL found a North American cult following after airing on Toonami for several years and the staff has always shared their love for it on social media.
Toonami has co-produced anime in the past, namely The Big O II and IGPX. Production I.G. worked with Toonami on IGPX, so this will be the second time they collaborate. Studio Bones will also be working on FLCL 2.
3Gainax is not involved in any capacity
Sorry Gainax fans, the famed studio isn’t will have no input on FLCL 2, but it may not be all bad. Gainax actually co-produced the original series with Production I.G. and they sold the complete rights to the studio in 2016.
4Some of the original staff remembers are returning
Just because Gainax isn’t involved doesn’t mean the original creators aren’t returning!
Series director Kazuya Tsurumaki is supervising the series and original character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto is returning.
The anime’s new staff is filled with talent and experience as well. Katsuyuki Motohiro (Psycho-Pass / Atom the Beginning) is directing the project with Chikashi Kubota (From the New World / One Punch Man) is designing the cast. Newcomer Hideto Iwai is writing the script.
5Yes, The Pillows are composing the soundtrack
Japanese alternative band The Pillows played a big role in forming FLCL‘s identity and they’re returning for another round!
