A 20-year-old male college student was arrested by Tokyo police for sending more than 20 death threats and other slanderous statements towards idol-seiyuu Sumire Uesaka.
Some of Uesaka’s roles include Sanae Dekomori (Chu-2 Byo), Nonna (Girls und Panzer), Anastasia (The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls), and Fubuki (KanColle).
According to a police report, the man threats like “I will kill Sumire Uesaka” on the Japanese textboard 2ch. Uesaka’s talent agency Space Craft hired body guards for her after they learned about the threats. Uesaka made some appearances at events with extra security, but the agency said the threats severely interfered with Uesaka’s work.
The man admitted to posting the death threats from his mobile phone, but he told the police that he was a fan of Uesaka. No motive has been determined yet.
The agency filed a damages report this month and applauded the police for treating the threats as a criminal case. They also thanked Uesaka’s fans for their support and their understanding of the situation.
Uesaka is the third female seiyuu to have received death threats since November 2016. Inori Minase canceled public events due to death threats, and Nana Mizuki‘s concerts had extra security after a stalker was found outside of her official fan club.
