Anime has a history of non-endings and annoying cliffhangers, but fans can always jump into the manga or light novel to continue the tale. But, what if the source material is plagued with hiatuses?
Here are some popular series that are constantly put on hiatus, and have fans worrying that the series will never get a proper ending. Note, series where the author or illustrator has passed away during publication are not included, nor are works with creators who are hospitalized. These works are put on hiatus for reasons that only fans can speculate on.
Kentaro Miura is notorious for putting Berserk on hold. Berserk has been published since 1989, but due to Miura’s irregular schedule, there are thoughts that we may never see a true ending to the fantasy epic.
There have been rumors related to Miura’s health or lack of future story ideas, but many fans seem comfortable blaming The iDOLM@STER for causing all of the delays.
2. Hunter x Hunter
Yoshihiro Togashi can’t seem to find a break, as a recent Japanese fan poll labeled him the laziest mangaka ever due to constantly putting Hunter x Hunter on hiatus.
Despite the lazy label, Togashi has been upfront about the arthritis in his lower pack, which can prevent him from getting out of bed. Some fans also speculate that he wants to take time to raise his children…or spend hours with Dragon Quest.
3. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has been on hiatus for the past six years! So far, the last novel is titled The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya, and it was released on May 2011.
Nagaru Tanigawa wrote an author note stating that the volume was not going to be the final story, and teased in 2013 that he had ideas for a new story. However, nothing has come to fruit.
Katsura Hoshino’s career has been filled with illness and injuries, which have caused her to take multiple hiatuses from D.Gray-man.
She has had the Norovirus, a serious neck injury, and a wrist injury which have cause her to take delay D.Gray-man. The wrist injury is of big concern, because it could limit her drawing ability if arthritis develops, which could lead to a premature D.Gray-man finale.
5. Log Horizon
Log Horizon is unofficially on hiatus due to author Mamare Touno being charged with tax evasion. Touno settled his legal problem, and his teased that volume 11 is in production.
If volume 11 is released in 2017, it will be the second two-year hiatus the series has took – volumes 5 and 6 had a two year gap. Touno has stated that the light novel will end after volume 15, but fans are on edge to see if he makes it that far.
CLAMP currently has three manga series on hiatus, with X/1999 being the most frustrating one. After working on 18 volumes between 1992 to 2003, CLAMP put the series on ice after a cliffhanger chapter.
Rumor has it that CLAMP put X/1999 on hold because the plot mirrored the real events of the Great Hanshin Earthquake and the Kobe Child Murders too closely. The manga group has said that they will finish the series if a magazine is interested in publishing it, but it has been 14 years since the last volume was released.
Kazushi Hagiwara is the king of hiatuses. Only 138 chapters have been created between 1988 and 2012, making Bastard!! one of the most delayed series on this list.
No one really knows why Bastard!! is constantly on hiatus. Hagiwara does not have any health issues, nor is he working on anything else (he did design the characters of Endride).
What series do you think we will never see end properly?
