The Lady Behind the Lewd: A Day in the Life of Nutaku’s Social Media Manager

The hentai gaming community has grown over the years as the medium has gain acceptance. One of the largest legal forerunners is Nutaku, a publisher that offers legal free-to-play eroge, serves as a hub for hentai gamers to connect, and has been growing at an incredible rate.

We spoke to their social media manager Nordland to learn how the larger community has grown, the perception of working at a hentai company, and what the future may hold.

1. Life at Nutaku Games

GoBoiano: Who are you?

Nordland: I’m Nordland and I’m the social media manager for Nutaku Games.

GB: What are people’s first impression hearing you’re a woman who works at a hentai game company?

NL: It’s usually very positive. People sometimes seem a little shocked, but they like to see a woman working in the hentai gaming industry, breaking down the assumptions that it’s mostly for men.

GB: Was it hard adjusting to talking openly about sex and hentai games in your job since it’s a taboo topic?

NL: It’s been years and I’m still adjusting! I sometimes hear people walk by my desk and I immediately close my tabs then I go “Wait! This is my job! I am allowed to be doing this!” Then there is the other end of the spectrum, where I’m out having a few drinks with coworkers and we end up talking too loudly about our ideas for hentai games.

GB: Do you actually play the games yourself?

NL: Yes, of course. You can often catch our first glimpse at some of the games on our Friday Twitch streams. There isn’t as much time as you might think to just sit around and play the games, but I always take the time to play through them as they come out. There are always a few that stick that I play every day (gotta get that login bonus!), but it would be very hard for me to play every game as much as I would like.

2. The Eroge Community

Nutaku

GB: What was your first impression of the community?

NL: We were brand new when I started, with a smaller, but dedicated, community. I loved it then, and I love it even more now! The community is extremely passionate about gaming and art, and are truly appreciative to have a place where they can be themselves and express their opinions openly and safely. I have learned a lot from them.

GB: What is the biggest misconception about people who like to play hentai games?

NL: One of the biggest misconceptions is that people who play hentai games are primarily young college-aged straight males. There are players from every race, creed, gender, and orientation playing every day. The games are not just for a certain type of person! There is something for everyone.

GB: Do you think there are significantly fewer women who like eroge or are they just less vocal?

NL: I think, in general, women are just less vocal about what they are into sexually, but I do know that there are a high number of women registered on Nutaku.

GB: How would you like to see the hentai community grow?

NL: I hope the stigma surrounding hentai games gets broken down and that it becomes more normalized like the general porn industry. I hope the community will grow as people become more comfortable being open about it.

3. All About the Games

Sacred Sword Princesses

GB: What games would you recommend to a newbie?

NL: Sacred Sword Princesses is a definite must. I think it’s a great game to introduce people to the world of eroge because the gameplay is great and the sex scenes are amazing – it’s just gentle enough to get them hooked.

GB: What are your favorite hentai games?

NL: Well, the ’90s kid in me is in love with Pocket Waifu, and I am slightly, slightly addicted to Armor Blitz and Attack on Moe-H.

GB: If you could turn any movie, show, book or game into an eroge, which would you choose and why?

NL: Ooh, this is a tricky one. I would just like to see some more mainstream games offer both a vanilla and hentai version. Imagine a GTA with a more realistic strip bar 😉

GB: What celebrity would you guess has probably played an eroge and why?

NL: Samuel L. Jackson. I don’t know why, I just have a feeling.

[Editors note: Samuel L. Jackson is very open about loving hentai.]

GB: Any upcoming news you’d like to share with the GoBoiano fans?

NL: Yes! We will be attending Anime Expo with some really cool guests, and Otakuthon here in Montreal as well. Please come meet the team if you have a chance! We’ve also got a Nutaku Desktop Client in the works, and HUGE plans for the upcoming year

I've been hooked on sci-fi, gaming, and anime ever since watching Trigun, Outlaw Star, and playing Final Fantasy. I love exploring shows and subjects that have been passed over. Pro-VR, pro-lewd, pro-indie gaming, and anti-censorship. I take about 4 major trips a year to other countries and love to visit the local fan conventions (sci-fi, anime, games, VR) when I can.
