What’s a hero without a villain? We all know that the hero is as good as the villain. They give the hero something to struggle against and to overcome. Ideally, you don’t root for the villain.
Some writers didn’t get the memo. Sometimes, they can do too good of a job, and create villains that are larger than life and charismatic. We know we’re not supposed to cheer for them or like them, but sometimes it feels good to be bad.
1. Esdeath – Akame ga Kill!
How she’s written: A brutal and sadistic Social Darwinist. She has no empathy for the weak, and enjoys torturing as a hobby. Esdeath has the power to overthrow the Empire, but she works for them because they enable her and her squad to mercilessly kill innocents. She also doesn’t seem to mind to command her troops to rape the women of conquered villages.
How the fans see her: OMG guys, did you see her blush! So kawaii! And those knockers ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). You know, she’s only bad because she had a troubled childhood.
2. Yuno Gasai – Mirai Nikki
How she’s written: A psychotic yandere with the largest body count in the entire series. Not only does Yuno stalk and isolate Yukiteru from others, but she manipulates him to kill his friends, kidnaps and leaves him in an abandoned warehouse, and is willing to torture Yukiteru’s mother if Yuna is not accepted. This unhealthy “relationship” comes from a joke promise that even she can’t remember.
How the fans see her: She just wants to be loved! Never take no for an answer, plus her craziness is totally super cool. Need I remind you that she’s only bad because she had troubled childhood?
3. Lucy – Elfen Lied
How she is written: The most sympathetic mass murderer in anime. Emphasis on mass murderer. Lucy’s hate stems from isolation and bullying, but that doesn’t excuse her killing every single human without provocation. Honestly, that makes Lucy no better than the kids that bullied her. And when Kouta denies her at a carnival when they were kids? Take about overreacting.
How the fans see her: Those kids that killed her stray puppy had it coming! Plus, humans suck any ways. And can you deny how cute her Nyu personality is? And need I bring up her troubled childhood? Okay, I’ll stop…
4. Sebastian Michaelis – Black Butler
How he’s written: Amoral at best, evil at worst. Sebastian is a predatory demon who only made a deal with Ciel so he could eat Ciel’s soul later.
How the fan’s see him: His manners are immaculate, the sparkles are sublime, and the shipping possibilities are to die for!
5. Char Aznable – Mobile Suit Gundam
How he is written: Detached from reason. Char has manipulated others (often at the cost of their lives), shifted the blame from the results of his failures, and planned on causing a nuclear winter on Earth for “the lolz.” Creator Tomino has stated that Char’s views on life is out of sync with everything.
How the fans see him: A sexy beast who did nothing wrong.
6. Light Yagami – Death Note
How he was written: A narcissistic, manipulative high school who has the power to kill anyone with the Death Note. He originally wanted to rid the world of criminals, but quickly become corrupted with the power of creating a new world where he is the god.
How the fans see him: A misunderstood savior who had to should the weight of the world on his shoulders.
7. Haruko Haruhara – FLCL
How she’s written: An energetic, selfish girl who lacks empathy for Naoto. Haruko tried to feed Naoto to the Terminal Core, just so she can have Amtosk’s power. When things didn’t work out, she tried killing Naoto when he has the power instead.
How the fans see her: zOMG! So random and cool. What’s she supposed to be doing again?
