The anime community is no stranger to anthropomorphized characters. From classics like the countries in Hetalia to more recent shows like the horses from last season’s Uma Musume. This season’s lineup brings us something we didn’t ask for but we’ve needed all along: moe cells.
Hataraku Saibou (Cells at Work!) is adapted from a manga series written and illustrated by Akane Shimizu. It features the cells that live inside your body and gives us a glimpse of their lives as they go about their day.
The story follows Red Blood Cell AE3803 (Kana Hanazawa), a ditzy newbie who’s tasked with delivering oxygen and carbon dioxide throughout the body. She’s a bit of an airhead and often needs the help of other cells to find her destination.
Our clumsy but determined protagonist eventually meets the cool and efficient Neutrophil U-1146 (Tomoaki Maeno), a type of White Blood Cell, when a sudden outbreak of germs near her delivery route puts her life in danger.
The wacky situation escalates and this has our heroes travel throughout the body, meeting all kinds of different cells and giving us a quick overview of the kinds of work they do. This includes the tiny and adorable platelets doing their best to keep you patched up!
Are you going to tune in and find out what happens when your insides is an anime?
