‘The Rising of the Shield Hero’ Brings Dark Isekai Action This Winter

Kinema Citrus’ adaptation of The Rising of the Shield Hero will debut in January 2019! The darker and character-focused take on the isekai genre is aiming to inject a more mature take on the medium.

The Rising of the Shield Hero is a popular isekai light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi and illustrated by Minami Seira. The story follows Naofumi Iwatani, an uncharismatic otaku who spends his time playing games and reading manga. One day, he is transported to a fantasy world with three other “heroes” and is tasked with saving the world from destruction.

Naofumi is equipped with a shield and is dubbed The Shield Hero: the weakest of the group. A quick betrayal leaves Naofumi penniless and alone. Without a way to return home, Naofumi is left with no choice to forge forward and to prevent a prophesied calamity.

The anime series is licensed by Crunchyroll, and they will debut the first dubbed episode at Crunchyroll Expo on September 3. One Peace Books has licensed the light novel, and they have published 8 out of 18 volumes so far.
