Mayu Shinjo is returning to the manga industry after an eight-year detour of focusing on her doujin Boys’ Love career! She’s going to resurrect the high-acclaimed Sensual Phrase series to focus on a new generation of characters.
Sono Koe de, Sono Uta O. will focus on Sensual Phrase protagonist Sakuya Ookochi as he searches for “a next-generation hero” that will usher in a new era of music. In a message written in Sho-Comi, Shinjo hopes that the new story will attract long-time fans of Sensual Phrase and newcomers. The new series will launch on February 5, 2019.
Sensual Phrase ended 19 years ago after a constant battle with her former editors of Sho-Comi‘s old regime.
The classic Sensual Phrase centered around high school student and aspiring lyricist Aine Yukimura after a chance encounter with Lucifer frontman Ookochi. After accidentally striking her with his car, Ookochi invites Yukimura to a performance — which features a song that she wrote.
Shinjo launched the hit manga in 1997, which was adapted into a 44-episode anime by Studio Hibari.
Shinjo’s once-promising manga career came to a screeching halt due to an abusive relationship with her editors at Shogakukan, which green-lit the Sensual Phrase adaptation without her knowledge and included unapproved story changes. After challenging the publisher, at least one editor threatened to pull her work from stores. Due to the stressful environment, Shinjo left the manga industry to focus on writing BL doujinshi.
Shinjo and Shogakukan seem to have repaired their relationship after a decade. Are you looking forward to Shinjo’s return to the industry?
