Voice actor Unshou Ishizuka has passed away due to esophageal cancer at the age of 67.
Aoni Production, his former talent agency, revealed that he was receiving medical treatment but it failed to curb the cancer. Ishizuka’s family held a private wake and funeral, and a public farewell is currently being planned to celebrate his life.
Ishizuka’s first role was in 1986’s Giant Gorg as a narrator — a common role that his distinct voice was made for. Some of his narration roles include Pokémon, Macross Delta, Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online, and The Isle of Dogs.
However, Ishizuka left a lasting impact after voicing four iconic characters: Jet Black (Cowboy Bebop), Professor Oak (Pokémon), Mr. Satan (Dragon Ball Super), and Joseph Joestar (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders & Diamond is Unbreakable).
Ishizuka’s final roles before his passing include Willibald Joachim von Merkatz (The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These), Dino Golzine (Banana Fish), and Cain Ibrahim Hassan (Last Hope).
