Movies that are canceled to screen in cinemas are rare nowadays. One of the most hyped anime movies in 2016, Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice), is having its screening canceled by Golden Screen Cinema (GSC).
GSC has indeed promoted and hyped the Malaysian anime community with Koe no Katachi screaning, which was scheduled for April 20th, 2017. But after a few days into promotion, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale screened in GSC on February 18th, 2017 at got hit with piracy. You can read more about it here.
The actions of the pirates didn’t ended there, as GSC deleted Koe no Katachi and Kimi no Na wa (Your Name) screening dates from their website. Your Name was released by GSC back in December of 2016, but for whatever reason, they had deleted it from their website. However, Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale is still up on the website, for whatever reason.
After receiving messages of worried customers, GSC posted a reassuring statement for the upcoming movie. Saying it will indeed still be releasing on April 20th, 2017. But as of this writing, there wasn’t any post about Koe no Katachi nor did the movie got back in the website’s upcoming movie list. The reason was that it was canceled to screen in GSC and they had deleted or hidden every post related to Koe no Katachi, acting like it was never announced.
After realizing this, I’ve private messaged GSC about the status of the movie. The response was not surprising after what it had went through.
“Hi, the movie will release on 20 April. However, GSC is not screening the movie. Sorry.”
The movie will still indeed release on April 20th, 2017 like promised. But it will not be on GSC because of the Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale incident. TGV Cinemas, the second largest cinema chain in Malaysia, will be screening Koe no Katachi though.
Let people know about this so it will make unauthorized recording in cinemas stop, as it will indeed ruin the country’s future anime releases. Koe no Katachi is one of the anime movies that proves unauthorized recording by pirates can hurt a country’s future anime releases.
