Kanye West is Still Praising ‘Akira’ For Inspiring His Career

Kanye West has never hidden his love for Japanese pop culture. He takes yearly trips to Tokyo to find fashion inspiration, collaborates with Takashi Murakami on art projects, and watches hentai during album listening parties.

His love can arguably be traced back to Akira, a landmark anime film that takes place in a dystopian Tokyo. West once got in an internet fight defending Akira as being better than Spirited Away and remade scenes in the “Stronger” music video.

A few weeks ago, West sent out a few Tweets crediting Akira for inspiring his career.

Now, you know what to thank (or blame) for West pursuing a rap and fashion career — a little anime movie called Akira.

Majored in Music @Duke, but realized that being a Jazz singer wasn't a real job. Now I spend my days watching anime and writing about the music industry. Glad to be in the new round of GB hires. Look forward to my coverage.
