Anime fans around the globe have been anticipating the premiere of Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai (I Want to Eat Your Pancreas). The premise of a boy spending time with a girl who has a terminal disease will surely move you to tears — just don’t expect much else.
Yoru Sumino wrote the acclaimed novel, but he wasn’t too thrilled about the anime. After watching an advance screening, he Tweeted:

“I saw the Pancreas anime. There are good parts, but honestly, it’s unsatisfying. Still, Sakura and Kyouko are extremely cute, and I saw how the lead pushes forward. From my heart, I’m proud that I wrote this story. Also, sumika’s song is just too good. I’ll leave the rest to those who watch it.”
It’s a surprisingly lukewarm review. Most creators share their happiness about an adaptation and hope that the fans will enjoy it, but Sumino has no problem sharing his true thoughts.
Fans will be able to judge Studio VOLN’s adaptation themselves when the movie releases in Japan on September 1. Aniplex of America is also planning U.S. screenings at a later time.
