Who doesn’t love the survival horror genre? Fans get to witness a cast of characters descend into madness as societal rules are stripped away, resulting in various death-games and failed bargains.
One series that has caught on with manga fans is Kyochuu Rettou (The Island of Giant Insects). As the title suggests, a group of students must survive on an island dominated by flesh-eating, giant insects. The class’ fate rests on Mutsumi Oribe and her encyclopedic knowledge of insects.
For now, the series is getting a one-off anime on June 20. The OAD will be bundled with a limited edition of the manga’s sixth volume, and it’s being produced by Passione (Citrus / Hinako Note). Chief director Takeo Takahashi (Spice and Wolf), screenwriter Shigeru Morita (Arpeggio of Blue Steel – Ars Nova), and character designer Takayuki Noguchi (Queen’s Blade: Rebellion) are working on the short anime.
Writer Yasutaka Fujimi and artist RED ICE launched The Island of Giant Insects in 2014, and the series is still ongoing. While some fans may be disappointed that the OAD will be a one-off, it could lead to a larger adaptation if the manga’s popularity continues to grow.
