The dream is dead. Chances of Btooom! getting a second season are nonexistent due to the mobile game flopping. Btooom! Online was launched in February and producer Masato Hayashi claimed if fans helped make the game a hit and maintain a top 5 ranking on Japan’s app chart then a second season would be possible.
Fast forward two months and it turns out the mobile game has turned out to be a disappointment. After ranking in the top 5 for a couple of weeks, Btooom! Online has fallen below the top 50.
In truth, a second season could have been farfetched even if the mobile game was a success. Mangaka Junya Inoue is currently writing the manga’s final arc, putting an end to the series which has been serialized since 2009. Madhouse produced a 12 episode anime adaptation for the Fall 2012 season, but it was a sales disaster: it only sold 338 copies in Japan.
While the anime was a failure in Japan, it has gained a cult following within the international community. The current anime industry doesn’t cater too much to international tastes, though Trigun: Badlands Rumble and Little Witch Academia: The Enchanted Parade were funded due to international interests.
But, some industry insiders believe the industry should try to cater to some international tastes. Btooom! season two isn’t happening anytime soon, but maybe it could happen if the industry decides to open up to international tastes.
