Legend of the Galactic Heroes is essentially Star Wars Game of Thrones. The series centers around a 150-year war between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance. With over 100 episodes, the series is a slow burn that deals with military strategy and political maneuvering, which caps off with epic space battles.

2Crest of the Stars

Crest of the Stars is the first part of a sci-fi saga, which leads into Banner of the Stars and Passage of the Stars. Basically, the series would be like following The Empire during the Galactic Civil War.

The series is told from the Abh’s imperial point of view, which is a space-faring race of aliens that conquer worlds so they can expand their empire. Jinto is a human boy who finds himself in Abh society after his father sold out their homeworld. Jinto meets an Abh princess named Lafiel, and during their training in military school, they witness the start of a war led by an alliance of democratic nations.

3Space Battleship Yamato 2199

The series follows the inexperienced crew of the Space Battleship Yamato. During Earth’s most desperate moment, the crew was quickly formed and dispatched on a 148,000 light year journey to Iscandar. It is believed that the inhabitants of Iscandar want to help Earth in their fight against the Gamilas Empire.

4The Irresponsible Captain Tylor

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor basically stars a Han Solo-type character the captain of a space crew. Justy Ueki Tylor is a cavalier spirit who has a knack for getting out of near-death situations.

5Outlaw Star

Outlaw Star includes a lot of science-fantasy elements that are found in Star Wars, including a force-type power. Gene Starwind has always dreamed of piloting a spacecraft but instead, finds himself performing odd jobs on the planet Sentinel III. But, when he accepts a job for the outlaw Rachel Sweet, Gene finds himself on the Outlaw Star.

6Cowboy Bebop

Maybe you like your rogue bounty hunters with less humor? Cowboy Bebop follows a ragtag group of bounty hunters who are trying to make a living in space. A majority of the series is episodic, but the final third is an action-packed and dramatic arc.

Idols with lightsabers? AKB0048 is a deceiving series. It does have the standard idol song and dance sequences, but the majority of the series follows a group of idol rebels fighting against the totalitarian Deep Galactic Trade Organization. With lightsabers.

8Last Exile

Last Exile can be looked at as a steampunk version of Star Wars that focuses on X-Wing pilots. The series takes place in the world of Prester, which is facing ecological devastation due to a war between the countries of Anatoray and Disith. Claus and Lavie are couriers, and their job involves running through the Grand Stream, which is a violent air current that separates the two warring countries. When they accept a job to deliver an orphan girl to a battleship, the duo finds themselves in the middle of a conspiracy.
