Valve Wants Creators to Censor Sexual Content in Steam Games

Valve is looking to crack down on sexual content in Steam games, with three popular developers claiming they got notices saying their games will be removed if they aren’t censored. All of the games that may be removed are anime-styled with sexual stories.

HuniePot, the developer of the popular HuniePop, Tweeted that Valve will remove the game if it’s not updated with a censorship patch. A Steam version of HuniePop is available, which includes mosaic censors during the sex scenes, but they still received a notice.

LupieSoft received a notice saying that Mutiny!! will be pulled within two weeks for having pornographic content. MangaGamer, the game’s publisher, is meeting with Valve to talk about the potential content violations.

Neko Works also shared that Tropical Liquor will be removed at the end of the month if it’s not censored. The studio wasn’t involved with the game, but their lead artist Sayori produced the game’s art design.

MangaGamer wrote a blog saying that Kindred Spirits on the Roof has also been targeted for removal, despite having prior permission in 2015 to sell an uncensored version on Steam.

The surprise notices from Valve have caught developers and publishers off-guard. Valve is constantly changing their policies on “pornographic content” for Steam games, which has been frustrating for creators.

In 2012, Valve released a statement saying that “Steam has never been a leading destination for erotic material,” and strictly forbade sexual games from being sold. However, developers could get around the ban by sharing links to uncensored patches.

However, Valve’s became more relaxed in 2015 when the yuri visual novel Kindred Spirits on the Roof was published uncensored. Other uncensored games were published shortly after.

In 2017, Valve reversed ship and began removing sexually explicit games from Steam. “Steam Versions” of erotic games with censorship could be sold, but creators were forbidden from linking to and talking about patches that would allow players to uncensor the game.

Not all games with sexual content are being threatened with removal. For example, The Witcher III, which is a Western RPG with sex scenes, is not on the chopping block.
