Two New “Sword Art Online” Anime Series Announced with PVs

Dengeki Bunko delivered some big announcements for Sword Art Online fans. The world is getting a double-dose of two SAO arcs that feel different than every arc that has been adapted before!

Sword Art Online: Alicization

The Alicization adaptation was teased at the end of Ordinal Scale, and now we have confirmation that it is happening. Alicization is the longest arc in the light novel, running from volumes 9 through 18.

The arc centers around Kirito awakening in a new world called “Underworld.” With no memories, Kirito learns to survive in a virtual world in which he is the only human surrounded by A.I. “people.” It’s a change-of-pace arc that focuses more on mystery and psychological elements, along with the classic action fans love.

A premiere date was not announced.

Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online

In a surprise announcement, it was revealed that the Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online spin-off novels will be adapted into anime. The series is written by Keiichi Sigsawa, who’s known for writing Kino’s Journey.

Alternative Gun Gale Online focuses on Karen Kohiruimkai, a girl who plays Gun Gale Online as a way to escape from life. In the game, she plays as a cute chibi avatar named Llen, but she tries to avoid player interaction. However, she meets Pitohui, who pressures Llen to participate in a battle royale tournament called Squad Jam.

A premiere date was not announced.
