According to 2chan rumors, “Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale” is almost at 1 Billion Yen after just 9 days and is set to break the record of the fastest “Late-Night Anime” movie to reach one billion. A title previously held by “Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part III: Rebellion” that reached a billion yen in 13 days.
A late-night anime is described as having more mature themes and geared towards adults and teens, often only showing in limited screens. Ordinal Scale screened in 140 theaters, in comparison to The Detective Conan movie that came out in 2016 which opened in 348 screens, Shin-Chan in 334 and Doraemon with 374 theaters.
