Rom-com web manga It’s Difficult to Love an Otaku (Wotaku ni Koi ha Muzukashii) is getting an anime adaptation! The series will air on noitaminA, which is a program block known for promoting josei and seinen anime.
It’s Difficult to Love an Otaku focuses on the awkward romances between adult otaku in the work force. Narumi Momose is a hardcore fujoshi and Hirotaka Nifuji is a gamer. The pair hasn’t seen each other since middle school, but are shocked to learn that they are co-workers at the same company. A night of drinking leads to a revelation of their hobbies, and they decide to start dating. However, their tendencies lead to very awkward moments with their fellow otaku co-workers.
Fujita first launched the manga series on Pixiv in 2014, with its popularity leading to a publication deal with Ichijinsha’s Comic POOL in 2015.
It’s Difficult to Love an Otaku has won praise in Japan for its cute, yet semi-realistic depiction of how some adults feel the need to hide their otaku hobbies. The manga was nominated for the 41st Kodansha Manga Awards, placed first in the This Manga is Amazing! guidebook, and is a top-10 recommended series at various Japanese book stores.
