GKids has revealed a bit more about their plans for the North American release of Studio Ghibli's new movie: From Up On Poppy Hill. Wait a minute - who are these GKids people, you say? Well, GKids is actually the brand responsible for that "Castles in the Sky" Ghibli retrospective film tour, which I've been reporting on obsessively this summer. They announced in June that they have the rights to distribute this new film. Since Disney usually snatches up Ghibli rights, it will be interesting to see what GKids does with the film.
Anyway, on to the distribution information: GKids will first be screening From Up On Poppy Hill in some sort of limited way so that it may qualify for the 2013 Academy Awards. The larger release - which will be accessible to all of us - will occur in March 2013, so mark your calendars! Additionally, GKids has revealed via Twitter that we will have access to an English dub of the film, in addition to the subtitled version. I'm skeptical that this company will be able to match the quality of Disney's dubs, but we shall see.
If you haven't been following From Up On Poppy Hill so far, what you need the know is that it's a new manga adaptation written by Hayao Miyazaki and directed by his son Goro. Check out the trailer:
