Osamu Tezuka’s ‘Dororo’ Gets a New Anime From Studio MAPPA

Anime studios MAPPA (In This Corner of the World Kids on the Slope) and Tezuka Productions are collaborating on a new adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s unfinished Dororo manga.

Tezuka’s supernatural-historical manga was canceled after 19 chapters but won a following with a 1969 anime series. Dororo follows Hyakkimaru, who was sacrificed to 48 demons as infante by his father. Hyakkimaru miraculously survived thanks to a prosthetic body and the aid of a thief named Dororo. He travels across Japan to slay the 48 demons he was sacrificed to in a bid to reclaim his real body.

While the Dororo manga was quickly canceled, it inspired a popular 26 episode anime series. It’s known for being the first entry into the World Masterpiece Theater series and has a conclusive ending. The series also inspired a 2007 live-action movie.

More details, such as a release date and production staff, will be shared at a later time.
