Oregon Embraces the Anime Aesthetic in Their Ghibli-Like Tourism Video

The state of Oregon is using anime to attract tourists with their “Only Slightly Exaggerated” campaign.

The anime commercial looks like a Studio Ghibli short with its enormous animals, idyllic scenery, and fantasy creatures. Each scene is based on real-life locations in Oregon – though you won’t be riding huge bunnies!

Some of the locations include:

The intentional use of anime was used to highlight Oregon’s natural beauty. According to Wieden+Kennedy agency art director Nick Stokes, “We thought Oregon deserved better than just another travel ad. So we turned to animation to try and capture its magic.”

American studio Psyop and Danish studio Sun Creature co-produced the animation for “Only Slightly Exaggerated.”

Oregon is the second North American location to use anime to promote tourism. Last September, Canada commissioned studio CoMix Wave (Your Name Garden of Words) to produce a “Destination Canada” spot.

What real-life location do you want to see turned into an anime next?

I sometimes write words so I'm here to bring a different perspective to anime culture.
