One Ok Rock is a popular alternative band, and they have been gaining international recognition. Citing Nirvana and The Smashing Pumpkins as big influences, the group made an international splash after touring in the USA, South America, and Europe in 2014. They have also performed all the theme songs for the Rurouni Kenshin live-action movie trilogy.

Avril Lavigne has been connected to Japan before. In 2012, she performed covers for “How You Remind Me” and “Bad Reputation” for One Piece Film: Z. She also landed in hot water for 2013’s single “Hello Kitty,” with many online fans roasting the music video as racist and fetishizing Japanese culture. Lavigne defended the video, saying she worked on it in collaboration with Japanese artists and her Japanese label. She also revealed that during this time, she spends half of the year living in Japan.

During Lavigne’s “Hello Kitty” controversy, she connected with One Ok Rock to appear on a Japanese music show. This lead to One Ok Rock meeting Lavigne a second time while they were touring in Canada, which eventually led to Lavigne appearing on a single for One Ok Rock’s latest album.

No doubt all this travel gave Michelle and Ryota a chance to bond as the two music giants collaborated on projects. The Japanese community has been hungry to learn more about Michelle, but she has a quiet social media life and remains a mystery to the public.

Majored in Music @Duke, but realized that being a Jazz singer wasn't a real job. Now I spend my days watching anime and writing about the music industry. Glad to be in the new round of GB hires. Look forward to my coverage.
