Japan's Olympics in 2020 has had people connecting the event to anime, Nintendo, and Sanrio characters from Day 1. But as we get closer to the date, it's not clear if they'll all be included in the landmark festivities.
The organizers of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo began rolling out their first wave of licensed products in the last few months and all of their character representatives are from anime.
Japan's confirmed spokescharacters are Astro Boy, Sailor Moon, Goku, Naruto Uzumaki, Monkey D. Luffy, Shinnosuke Nohara (Crayon Shin-chan), Izayoi Riko and Asahina Mirai (Mahou Tsukai Pretty Cure!), and Jibanyan (Yo-kai Watch).
What is surprising is that not a single character from Nintendo's library was chosen for the first wave of merchandise. Especially since Mario was featured at the previous Winter Olympics in a very flashy style.
Mario and Pikachu are two of the most recognizable characters and the Japanese Prime Minister was dressed as Mario even! Maybe Nintendo products will make an Olympic appearance at a later time but for now, anime is officially Olympics material.
I really like to look at the darker side of things, like a shadow following you at night...or maybe I'm just trying too hard? Anyways, Persona is my life!
