We have a “controversy” in otaku-dom.
Hiroshi Kamiya is one of the hottest voice actors in the industry.
His roles include Kou Ichinomiya (Arakawa Under the Bridge), Levi Ackerman (Attack on Titan) and Izaya Orihara (Durarara!!). However, he has come under fire because of his personal life…
Hiroshi Kamiya has been forced to apologize for his marriage and fathering a son with his wife.
About a month ago, gossip magazine FLASH showed a paparazzi photo of Kamiya carrying a child. Rumors were circulating, but Kamiya has came out with an apology in a radio show he co-hosts.
In line with the FLASH article, I would like to sincerely apologize to the fans whose hearts I may have hurt. I’m truly sorry…we [Kamiya and wife Nakamura Hikaru] stayed silent on this matter until now as we did not have any time to announce it, and there were very few people who would intrude in my personal matters. If everybody will give me permission, I would like to continue working through my voice and performance. The staff has allowed me to talk about this today since I do not have a blog or use SNS such as Twitter. I promise to do my best in this work in order to give the best entertainment to everyone, so it will make me delighted if me and my wife will be supported by everyone in spite of this news.
This is another example of the negatives of the otaku culture.
Some segments of Japanese otaku are very possessive of voice actors, idols, and gravure models. For years the idol industry has made singers sign contracts preventing them from entertaining a relationship before retiring.
The voice acting industry doesn’t have such rules, but more than a handful of prominent voice actors have come under fire for getting married or having a child. A popular example is when Aya Hirano (voice of Haruhi Suzumiya) almost retired because of the constant harassment she received for her marriage.
Do you think this will affect Hiroshi Kamiya’s career?
