Production I.G. has started trickling out information on their new adaptation of Legend of the Galactic Heroes. The project was first announced in 2015, during the 35th anniversary of the light novel series.
The anime’s official website updated with a new key visual of Reinhard von Lohengramm, the founder of New Galactic Empire. An event introducing the new voice cast and production staff, as well as the unveiling of a special promo video, will be held on September 20.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a space opera written by Yoshiki Tanaka, who is also known for The Heroic Legend of Arslan. The series covers an epic war between the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance while diving into the personal stories of Imperial Admiral Reinhard (Galactic Empire) and Commodore Yang Wen-Li (Alliance).
The light novels were published for 5 years between 1982 to 1987, but enjoyed long-term success as anime, which ran from 1988 to 2000. Artland and Magic Bus co-produced the anime, with Madhouse being involved with the first movie and the first 26 episodes of the OVA series.
The original anime release line includes:
- My Conquest is the Sea of Stars (1988 / movie)
- The Legend of the Galactic Heroes (1988 – 1997 / 110 episode OVA)
- Golden Wings (1992 / movie)
- Overture to a New War (1993 / movie)
- Gaiden (1998 – 2000 / 52 episode OVA)
