‘Koi wa Ameagari no You ni’ is This Season’s Lovable Romance

It’s been slim pickings for romance fans this winter, but sometimes quality is better than quantity! Koi wa Ameagari no You ni (After the Rain) has the makings of a winner with a compelling lead character, a great art style, and adorable moments. You just have to come to terms with the age gap.

What is Koi wa Ameagari no You ni?

The story stars Akira Tachibana, a 17-year-old who used to be her track team’s ace but quit after an injury. She finds a part-time job at a family restaurant and finds herself crushing on the 45-year-old manager.

The Reality of Crushing on Older Folks

Koi wa Ameagari no You ni

Koi wa Ameagari no You ni seems like a scandalous tale between a man and a high school girl, but the story is way more light-hearted than it appears.

First off, it’s told from Akira’s perspective. She’s a soft-spoken girl who took great pride in running, but her speed was stolen from her due to an injury. Akira still loves track and field, which causes her great emotional pain, so she found a part-time job.

While working, she meets Masami Kondo. He’s the restaurant’s dorky manager with a young son, and he comes off as a good guy.

Koi wa Ameagari no You ni does a great job establishing the pair’s dynamics. Akira is harboring a massive crush on her dorky boss, which may be a way to further keep her mind off of track. Masami is aware of her crush, but feels more flattered than anything else.

In fact, the story feels how teenage crushes work in the real world. Sometimes, you just develop a crush on your boss, teacher, or a friend’s parent – and it doesn’t lead to anything. The adult is almost always aware since teens are transparent, but the relationship can be used to give advice or form a platonic bond.

The series’ age gap might be off-putting, but the feel and direction of the series seems to point towards nothing too scandalous happening as the heroine grows up through this crush. Plus, it’s hard to let this series go when the anime has one of the freshest looks of the season.

Should You Watch Koi wa Ameagari no You ni?

This is a seinen series with a focus on character interactions. Akira is going to have cute thoughts, sparkles will appear, and Masami will share a dad joke.

Koi wa Ameagari no You ni is incredibly heartfelt despite the darker setup. The anime also does a great job showing rather than telling – don’t expect a lot of monologues! Fans of cute romances, silver foxes, and unique aesthetics should 100% check it out.

You can legally stream Koi wa Ameagari no You ni (After the Rain) on Amazon Prime.
