Japan’s Sakura Season has Started and It’s Breathtaking

Hanami is a long-standing Japanese tradition of celebrating the beginning of spring. While hanami is a generic term for flowering viewing, it’s strongly associated with sakura (cherry) blossoms. The annual celebration, which is also called “the cherry blossom festival,” is spent admiring nature’s beauty.

People typically gather at parks with friends, family, and co-workers and host picnics under the many cherry trees to appreciate the blooming flowers. Some celebrations can last all day, with places like Ueno Park hanging paper lanterns so people can enjoy night viewing, which is called yozakura.

Hanami is a centuries-old tradition, dating back to the Nara period (710-794 A.D.). Back then, the festivals celebrated ume (plum) blossoms and it wasn’t until the Heian period (794-1185 A.D.) that sakura (cherry blossoms) came into vogue. In fact, umemi (plum blossom viewing) is a popular alternative for people looking for a more quiet way to welcome spring!

The hanami season is always highly anticipated, with people glued to the weather reports every year. The “cherry blossom front” is a part of the weather report, and refers to the blooming season. Cherry blossoms tend to bloom from Kyuushuu in late March to Hokkaido in the middle of May. Okinawa is special in that their hanami season is in early February – perfect for an early Valentine’s Day date!

Cherry blossoms only last for about 14 days, which makes it a symbol of mono no aware. This concept highlights the beauty and volatility of life. The blossoms’ beauty only lasts for a short period of time but it brings great happiness to others, which makes cherry blossoms are a popular visual metaphor for life in anime and manga.

Hanami happens during the beginning of the school year, which makes welcoming parties at parks very popular. Is there a better way to welcome the school year?

Sakura-themed goods and food are also released during the hanami season. Sweets, tea, sake bottles, and other products sport soft-pink packaging and cherry flavors.
