Animplex announced that Sunrise is working on the movie, which will be released in spring 2019 season. The film will take place in modern-day Shinjuku, with Akira Kamiya and Kazue Ikura reprising their roles as Ryo Saeba and Kaori Makimura respectively. Kenji Kodama, who has directed most of the past City Hunter projects, will oversee the film and Yoichi Kato (Aikatsu!) will write the script.
City Hunter is an iconic franchise that reigned supreme during the ’80s and ’90s. Tsukasa Hojo’s original manga follows Ryo, who is a sweeper and a deadshot. He forms an underground operation called City Hunter with his partner Hideyuki, but a tragic incident forces him to watch over Kaori. Ryo’s womanizing habits irritate Kaori, but they manage to work together to take down crime that is plaguing Shinjuku.
City Hunter has been adapted into four TV anime series, one anime film, three anime specials, and two OVAs. It also has two famous live-action adaptations: a 1993 Hong Kong film starring Jackie Chan and a 2011 Korean TV drama starring Lee Min-ho.
Additional story and cast details will be shared at a later date.
