The series follows an urban legend about a shinigami that can release people from pain, which is a popular story among school girls. However, the sudden disappearances of female students from Shinya Academy are treated as runaway cases. But second-year-student Nagi Kirima believes something more sinister is at play and that it might be related to similar past event.

Shingo Natsume (One Punch Man ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.) is directing the series at Madhouse with scriptwriter Tomohiro Suzuki (Tiger & Bunny). Hidehiko Sawada (key animator for Redline) is designing the cast and Kensuke Ushio (A Silent Voice Devilman Crybaby) is composing the music. The anime will feature a new voice cast from the 2000 adaptation, with Aoi Yuuki and Saori Onishi playing Boogiepop and Nagi Kirima respectively.
