Hayao Miyazaki has been toiling away at Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka (How Do You Live?) for the past two years. Originally, Miyazaki hoped to complete the film in time to release it during the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, but that is no longer a reality.
Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki revealed that the film will open in three to fours years, putting it in a 2021 to 2022 release window. Suzuki noted that Miyazaki began to draw storyboards in 2016 and is hoping to “do things that could not be done before.”
Kimi-tachi wa Dou Ikiru ka is based on Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel of the same name. It follows a young man and his uncle exploring what it means to live as human beings.
