The movie will center around the Dragon Cry artifact, which is said to have the power to destroy the world or bring hope. Natsu and the Fairy Tail guild are tasked with retrieving the artifact from the Kingdom of Stella, but they soon discover that various parties have ulterior motives for using the Fairy Tail guild for this task.
Mashima is working as executive producer for the movie and has draw 193 pages worth of storyboards while contributing key visual art. Tatsuma Minamikawa (episode director for Attack on Titan, Aldnoah.Zero, and GATE) will direct the movie with A-1 Pictures producing the animation. The cast from the first two seasons will reprise their roles. Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry will premier in Japanese theaters on May 6, 2017 and will get a theatrical release in Australia and New Zealand.
