At this year’s AnimeJapan 2017 event, studio Bones reassured Kekkai Sensen (Blood Blockade Battlefront) fans that the second season will be more faithful to the manga compared to the first season. Despite high sales, one common complaint was how the anime rearranged the order of events and created a story arc centered around Macbeth family, who are not in the manga.
Titled Kekkai Sensen & Beyond, Bones revealed the anime will be 12 episodes and air during the Fall 2017 season. The voice cast from the previous season will reprise their roles, but the director and screenwriter will be different. Shigehito Takayanagi (Dagashi Kashi director) will replace Rei Matsumoto as the director and Yasuko Kamo (Dagashi Kashi series composer) will replace Kazunao Furuya as the screenwriter.
Kekkai Sensen was created by Yasuhiro Nightow, who is known for creating Trigun. The series is a blend of the supernatural, action, and slice of life genres. It centers around a crime fighting organization called Libra as they try to maintain order in Hellsalem’s Lot, which was formerly New York City. Leonardo Watch ventures to Hellsalem’s Lot after he attains an ability called All Seeing Eyes of God, which was granted at the cost of his sister’s eyesight. While looking for a way to restore her vision, Leonardo unwittingly becomes a member of Libra.
