Today is the internet’s favorite holiday: 4/20!
While Japan doesn’t have the “blaze it” culture the internet demands, they have created some anime that will take you on a trip.
FLCL is the quintessential stoner anime. It’s trippy visuals, archaic story (which is allegedly about puberty), and chill soundtrack by The Pillows make for perfect viewing.
Monogatari is Shaft at their finest. They use a unique animation style that includes cutaways to real life images, flashy colors, and interesting framing techniques. It doesn’t hurt that the mystery story is intriguing and that the characters are fun.
Space Dandy is a trip that follows an alien hunter and his eccentric sidekicks. The story is simple: Dandy and crew travel the galaxy searching for new alien species. Space Dandy was lead by Shinichiro Watanabe (the creator of Cowboy Bebop) but features work from 70 different creators. Each collaborator was encouraged to use their own style, giving every episode a different feel.
4Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan
Dokuro-chan is weird stuff while sober. It’s about an angel who is sent to the past to kill a junior high student before he grows up and creates a lolicon world. There is a lot of gory slapstick humor and double entendres.
Satoshi Kon’s works tend to challenge viewers to question reality and fiction, with Paprika being the most trippy movie he worked on. It follows a psychiatrist who illegally jumps into her patients’ dreams so she can help solve their problems.
Kunihiko Ikuhara is anime’s most eccentric directors. Mawaru Penguindrum really highlights his talents: two brothers look for a “penguindrum” that will heal their terminally ill sister while a penguin hat temporarily keeps her alive. If the story doesn’t blow your mind, the symbology and cute penguins might.
7Daily Lives of High School Boys
Daily Live of High School Boys follows three friends trying to pass time while surviving high school. It’s a mix of absurd humor, slapstick, low-key sex jokes.
Let’s ramp up the absurd humor! Ever have trouble ordering a coffee at Starbucks? What about having the urge to suplex a deer? How about have your yaoi stash discovered by your friends? Nichijou covers so many relatable situations while using a fun animation style.
Plastic Nee-san will be the craziest 30 minutes of your life.
10Welcome to Irabu’s Office
Welcome to Irabu’s Office is about a doctor in a bear suit stabbing his patients with needles to fix their problems! I don’t know what he’s peddling, but I need it.
11Kill la Kill
*Hits blunt* Kill la Kill is about a girl looking for her father’s killer while wearing a skimpy sentient power suit, while a group of naked freedom fighters combats a conglomerate that tries to enslave humanity by selling evil clothes. Triggers animation style is also crazy, as it blends the best techniques from anime and Western cartoons.
What do you think are the perfect anime for 4/20?
