Who doesn’t enjoy a good love triangle? As the name implies, it centers around three people who love each other in varying degrees. It’s often times used to introduce drama, especially if two of the characters are childhood friends. Depending on how tragic (or emotional) the series gets, a fourth person can be introduced to the triangle as a way to give all members a happy ending.
But don’t worry, we won’t be spoiling the results. So relax, you get to enjoy the emotional anguish too!
1Nagi no Asukara
Nagi no Asukara is home to some really relationship-based between the cast of friends. The most compelling of the triangles involves Hikari, Manaka, and Chisaki.
The three have been friends since childhood, with Hikari harboring feelings for Manaka. Manaka is semi-aware of this, but isn’t sure if she wants to be with Hikari or Tsumugu. Chisaki tries to support Manaka as a friend, but she can’t help feel her love for Hikari is getting in the way.
Chihayafuru begins with childhood friends Chihaya and Taichi. While it starts out as a one-sided affair with Taichi longing for Chihaya, things get messy as transfer student Arata appears. Not only does he captures Chihaya’s eye, but he introduces her to karuta.
3Super Dimension Fortress Macross
Macross was one of the first anime to use a love triangle to introduce drama and it’s become a series staple! While everyone has their favorite triangle from the franchise, the original Macross arguably has the best-written one. Hikaru, Misa, and Minmay are all flawed, human characters with great character development, which makes their interactions so poignant.
4Full Metal Panic!
Full Metal Panic! is not a tradition romance series, but it’s home to an interesting take on this trope. Kaname and Tessa have their own unique way of showing their love to Sousuke, who is hopelessly unaware. Sousuke views Kaname as someone he is assigned to protect while Tessa is his superior officer.
5Honey and Clover
Honey and Clover has two sets of triangles, but the one fans love to focus on is between Shinobu, Hagumi, and Yuuta. Basically, Shinobu and Yuuta were great friends until the petite Hagumi entered their lives. Both guys fall for Yuuta, but Hagumi is uncertain who she should love.
6Your Lie in April
Your Lie in April is another series with two main love triangles, but we’ll cover the one fans fawn over the most. It centers around Kousei, Kaori, and Tsubaki. Kousei and Tsubaki have known each other since childhood, which leads Tsubaki to harbor feelings for Kousei. However, Kousei develops feeling for Kaori since she reintroduces music to his life.
Kokoro Connect centers around swapping bodies between a group of five friends. What seems like a goofy supernatural phenomenon leads to an emotional connection between Himeko, Taichi, and Iori. The trio begins to learn each other’s secrets and feelings, which leads to some complications within the group.
8Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu
A good love triangle has to introduce a believable amount of drama between all players. In Rakugo, Yakumo and Sukeroku start as friends who have been raised by their rakugo master. While their personalities are opposites, they’ve managed to remain friends over the years. But the appearance of a woman named Miyokichi changes their dynamic.
What do you think are the best love triangles?
