Berserk has a reputation for being an insanely gory manga while still having a good story. It’s too common for gory projects to forsaken a story to focus solely on the blood bits, especially in movies.
However, are some Asian movies that have good stories and can compete with Berserk on the gore front.
Battle Royale is one of the most popular modern Japanese movies due to a combination of its controversial plot that involves teens killing each other and Quentin Tarantino giving it his seal of approval. The story follows 42 9th graders that are taken to an island. They are given a map, food, weapons, and are fitted with explosive collars. The rules are simple: be the last survivor. If anyone breaks the rules or if there are more than one survivor, the collars will explode.
Audition is a psychosexual that covers themes of abuse, misogyny, and the fear of deceit. It’s just wrapped up in a bloody box! The story follows Aoyama, a widower who holds fake movie auditions in the hope of finding a new lover. He falls for a withdrawn woman named Asami, but she ends up being a psycho.
3Ichi the Killer
Ichi the Killer is known as the most sadistic movie of all-time. At the time of release, theaters handed out barf bags to moviegoers due to rumors of people falling ill. The story follows a repressed killer named Ichi. Despite acting like a child, he is the most ruthless killer in the Japanese underground. Rival yakuza gangs manipulate Ichi into killing one another.
4Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky is a Hong Kong martial arts movie based on a Japanese manga of the same name. It follows Ricky Ho, a young man of superhuman strength who is imprisoned by corrupt officials. The officials plan on forcing him to fight and kill other prisoners as a “solution” to overcrowding in privatized jails.
5Noriko’s Dinner Table
Noriko’s Dinner Table is a sorta prequel/sequel to Suicide Club, but you enjoy this movie without having seen Suicide Club. The movie is a twisted take on Japan’s generational gap, social alienation, suicide, and individual identity in a collectivist society. It’s also bloody and insane, making it perfect for gore hounds.
6The Red Shoes
The Red Shoes is a mindbending trip as long as you can stomach gore. It follows Sun-jae, a woman who leaves her cheating husband and moves into an old apartment with her daughter. Sun-jae finds a pair of red shoes on the subway and takes them home, not realizing they house a malevolent force. The darkest desires of those around Sun-jae become real, which leads to horrific deaths.
Infection is a claustrophobic body-horror film that takes place in an understaffed hospital. Dr. Akiba and two nurses accidently kill a patient. Fearing that their careers will be tainted due to a malpractice report, they agree to cover up the incident. However, a neglected patient with a strange rash is wandering the halls…and is slowly liquefying into a strange goo.
What gory Asian movies do you think are crazier than Berserk?
